Orkney has abundant bird life to enjoy year round
July 16, 2017
If you are a bird lover and are visiting Orkney for our amazing birding opportunities, you will find Newbigging to be a great location. We are located very close to RSPB bird reserves The Loons and Loch of Banks (just a few minutes drive!) and Marwick Head with its stunning sea birds colonies breeding on the cliffs in the spring months.
Hen Harriers are having a really tough time on mainland UK but Orkney remains a stronghold for them and you may get lucky and spot them from Newbigging! The RSPB have also set up Cottasgarth Hide where on a good day you might spot five different species of birds of prey, including the beautiful hen harriers doing their sky dance. Watch out for the stunning short eared owls (locally called ‘catty face’) silently gliding over the hill side in search of Orkney voles as well.
